Palladium and platinum are two of Montana’s most prominent minerals, generally found in the southern part of the state. Gold is or has been mined in 30 of Montana’s 56 counties, while silver has been mined in 29. In Rocky Mountain Montana the mountain ranges are aligned generally from north-northwest to south-southeast. They are made up of ancient hard rocks that were compressed, folded, faulted, and otherwise contorted by the mountain-building forces that created the Rockies, beginning about 100 million years ago. In spite of its northern location, Montana is very much a Western state.
Libby is surrounded by lakes, trails, campsites, fishing areas and scenic drives. For outdoor enthusiasts fishing the blue-ribbon Kootenai River or boating on Lake Koocanusa are always great pastimes. The Kootenai National Forest offers over two million acres of forest for hiking, camping and backpacking, miles of streams and trails, and numerous lakes. Gold, copper, and hard-rock mining were not the only natural resources that were exploited in Montana during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Cattle and sheep grazing in Great Plains Montana started in the 1860s as herds were driven from Texas. The vast grasslands of Montana seemed geographically ideal for cattle, but a harsh winter in 1886 and 1887 wiped out almost all of the herds. Around 1900, homesteaders evolved their farming techniques and moved into the plains country to grow grain on semiarid, largely non-irrigated land.
The State of Montana is located in the northwestern United States. The landlocked state of Montana is bordered by the states of Idaho in the west, and by Wyoming in the south. It is also bordered by the Canadian provinces of British Columbia, Alberta, and Saskatchewan in the north. Montana’s Eastern Plains cover roughly a third of the state to the east. Wide plains, prairies, and rolling grasslands cover the majority of the region. Some parts of this region, however, have desert-like characteristics, featuring scrub instead of grassland. For those who live for winter, Montana is the ultimate destination. The Montana Supreme Court is the court of last resort in the Montana court system. The constitution of 1889 provided for the election of no fewer than three Supreme Court justices, and one chief justice. The legislature increased the number of justices to five in 1919. The 1972 constitution lengthened the term of office to eight years and established the minimum number of justices at five. It allowed the legislature to increase the number of justices by two, which the legislature did in 1979.
It is also the place where the majority of the Montana population lives. Around 18,000 miners were working in 138 mines in Butte in 1917. A century later, the invention of fiber optic cable for communication and PVC pipe for plumbing led to the collapse of the copper market. There are around 250 miles of streets in Butte and over 2,500 miles of underground mining tunnels beneath the streets. Montana is one of only five states with no sales tax, along with Alaska, Delaware, New Hampshire, and Oregon.
Its rivers feed the Pacific Ocean, the Gulf of Mexico, and Hudson Bay. The watersheds divide at Triple Divide Peak in Glacier National Park.[49] If Hudson Bay is considered part of the Arctic Ocean, Triple Divide Peak is the only place on Earth with drainage to three different oceans. At the state level, the pattern of split-ticket voting and divided government holds. The state’s congressional seats (now two districts, but until 2023, one at-large district) have been Republican since 1996, and its Class 2 Senate seat has been held by Republican Steve Daines since 2014. The two chambers of the state’s legislature had split party control from 2004 to 2010, when that year’s mid-term elections decisively returned both branches to Republican control. The Montana Senate is, as of 2021, controlled by Republicans 31 to 19, and the House of Representatives is currently 67 to 33. Historically, Republicans are strongest in the east, while Democrats are strongest in the west.
When so authorized by the legislature, actions of executive branch agencies may be appealed directly to a District Court. The District Courts also have de novo appellate jurisdiction from inferior courts (city courts, justice courts, and municipal courts), and oversee naturalization proceedings. There are 22 judicial districts in Montana, served by 56 District Courts and 46 District Court judges. The District Courts suffer from excessive workload, and the legislature has struggled to find a solution to the problem. As of the census of 2000,[97] there were 25,780 people, 11,541 households, and 6,474 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,840.7 people per square mile (710.7 people/km2). There were 12,133 housing units at an average density of 866.3 units per square mile (334.5 units/km2).

The Yellowstone Jewel is an excellent hike to do near Miles City.
Long-distance trips are frequent occasions for socializing and entertainment or cures for prairie- or mountain-born restlessness. Montana contains Glacier National Park, “The Crown of the Continent”, and parts of Yellowstone National Park, including three of the park’s five entrances. The CSKT Bison Range is managed by the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes and the American Prairie is owned and operated by a nonprofit organization. Montana is one of the eight Mountain States, located in the north of the region known as the Western United States. Wyoming is to the south, Idaho is to the west and southwest, and the Canadian provinces of British Columbia, Alberta, and Saskatchewan are to the north, making it the only state to border three Canadian provinces.
Long-distance travel over great amounts of time resulting in fatigue, hazardous winter road conditions, distances from emergency services, and alcohol consumption frequently contribute to the high number of deaths on Montana’s highways yearly. This is not to say it’s unsafe to drive in Montana — just beware. If you are unused to driving winding mountain roads or driving in extremely hazardous snow/wind/ice/rain/sleet conditions, do not do so. Wait for the weather to clear — it may result in a good story, those 12 hours you spent at a truck stop with some friends waiting for a pass to clear. Did you know the Montana’s official state bird, the western meadowlark, is not really a lark? Studies showed that it should not be part of the lark family and is not of the same species as the eastern meadowlark. In the 1870s the invention of electricity and the miles city plus popularity of indoor plumbing spurred a great need for copper to carry electrical current and water.
A franchise election was held to determine who would serve Miles City on June 28, 1927. They persuade a cab driver to take their wounded classmate to the hospital, while the rest run down the street, eventually finding a house where 30 students who survived the attack in Iguala have taken refuge. On the road into Iguala, they see one of the five buses their classmates had taken. Its tires have been punctured, its windows broken and its luggage compartments opened. At the same time, they receive desperate phone calls from other attacked students who try to describe where they are so that Martínez and his companions can go pick them up.
The ethnic makeup of the city is 94.8% White, 0.2% African American, 2.1% Native American, 0.8% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.4% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Only Alaska and Wyoming have fewer people per square mile than Montana. The state with the densest population is New Jersey, which has an average of 7,354 people per square mile.
